Player Profile: Imogen Briers

THE SERIOUS STUFF:

How long have you been playing badminton?

I’ve been playing badminton for about 38 years!

How long have you been a member of Farsley Celtic Badminton Club?

I’ve been a member of Farsley Celtic for 11 years.

What appeals to you most about the game?

It’s really good fun and you get lots of exercise.

What do you enjoy most about the club nights?

It’s good to play with a mix of people and standards.  We have a very friendly set of people and it’s good fun, competitive and a laugh.

What’s your favourite badminton shot?

Oh that’s a tricky one, any shot that wins me the point really, but a nicely intercepted net shot winner always feels pretty good!

You play for the club in the Leeds Badminton League – how different is competitive badminton to club night badminton?

It can be more mentally challenging playing matches but I enjoy trying to win games and working with the rest of the team to do our best.  Club night is more relaxed and fun and you get to play with everyone rather than sticking with one partner.

What has been your competitive highlight so far?

Think I peaked at 10-years-old when I was runner up in singles and doubles in a big competition in Nottingham!

Where would you like to see your game in two years’ time?

I would like to still be playing ladies and mixed with hopefully a few improvements to my overall game.

How much does badminton contribute to your overall fitness?

A lot, I think. I also do other exercise but badminton club works your whole body and is good for mental as well as physical fitness.

How competitive are you? Do you want to win every game?

Very. I want to win every game I play and want to play my best whether I win or lose.

Which player or players do you admire most at the club, and why?

Charles is a great inspiration and demonstrates that you can keep playing to a good standard and keep fit even after retirement.

FANTASY BADMINTON:

So, what’s your court entry theme tune when you get to the Olympics?

‘Back in Black’ by AC/DC.

What part of Palfs’s game do you admire the most?

Really???  Ha ha.  Can’t remember!

If you could invent a rule change (however fantastical), what would it be?

Get rid of the net.

Who are you coming as in the next Farsley-does-fancy-dress competition?

I don’t do fancy dress. Boring, sorry!

AWAY FROM THE BADMINTON COURT

Do you participate in other sports? If yes, which ones?

I occasionally play tennis, do circuit training, yoga and weight training.

What’s your ideal post-badminton drink?

Cider, a pint, please.

How do you think the club could be improved?

We have a good club, but we do need more women players as it can be hard to get a team together sometimes.

If you could choose anything, what would be your ideal social event with the club?

Pub crawl always sounds good to me – forget about food!

How do you wind down after a club night?

Couple of pints or a glass or two of wine.
