The Men’s B team laid a strong platform for next season’s promotion challenge by finishing third in the Leeds & District Badminton League Division 4 competition.
Following a testing and problematic season in League 3, where player shortages and a glut of injuries and illness meant submitting a full team was often difficult – and where, despite this, certain opposition teams refused to rearrange matches – third was a great comeback performance, testament to a team that regrouped and re-committed to the cause.
Indeed, claiming the third spot went down to the final rubber of the final match, where the last gasp win and the single point earned from it, meant Farsley finished above Horsforth. In a league where the two promoted teams could easily compete at a much higher level, third was a great achievement.
The team finished with a positive 9-7 winning record; highlights included doubles over Otley and Scott Hall and a 9-0 victory over Collingham Grange.
As Captain I would like to thank regular players Derek Windsor, Ian Richardson, Sam Hall, Ian Anderson and Simon Osbaldiston for their efforts throughout the season, and also thank John Weir, Andrew Sherriff, Barrie Walker and Dan Roach for stepping into the team when regulars were absent.
I would also like to thank Scott Hall B, who kindly agreed to rearrange one fixture due to bad weather, despite the fact that they had already pre-booked the hall.
The new season will see relegated teams and old rivals Batley and Ramgarhia re-joining us in Division 4 and, as always, we anticipate the unknown with the possible introduction of brand new teams to the league.
It is hoped the 2015-16 season will see three regular, strong pairings leading the way, ably backed up by capable reserves when needed – a pool of committed players is essential if we are to go one better next year.
